2013-2014 Capital One Academic All-America Honorees

TOWSON, Md. – Pitcher Ellen Renfroe, a senior at the University of Tennessee, leads the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Softball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A psychology major with a 3.75 G.P.A., Renfroe is the Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I softball.  A native of Jackson, Tennessee, she is a three-time Academic All-American® after earning second team honors in 2012 and 2013.

Renfroe has led the No. 9 Volunteers to a 45-10 record and a NCAA regional championship this year.  She has compiled a 29-6 record in 2014 with a 1.93 earned run average, 11 shutouts and four saves in 221.0 innings.  She has struck out 235 batters and limited the opposition to a .194 batting average.  She was named a Top 25 finalist for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for a third straight year.  UT faces the University of Oklahoma in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend.

Renfroe recently went over 100 victories for her career.  She is 101-23 during her four seasons with a 1.62 ERA and 12 saves.  She has struck out 995 batters in 853.2 innings.  She has also tossed a pair of no-hitters and 40 shutouts.  She earned Second Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Southeast Region and Women’s College World Series All-Tournament Team honors in 2013.  She was a Louisville Slugger/NFCA First Team All-American and First Team All-Southeast Region choice in 2012.  She was also first team all-region and third team All-American in 2011.  In addition, she was a member of the 2012 U.S. Elite team.

Renfroe is one of eight players on the Capital One Academic All-America® first team that played in the NCAA Regionals last weekend.  Five of those players have helped their teams to advance to play in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend.

In addition to Renfroe, pitcher Anna Miller of University of South Carolina Upstate, catcher Molly Fichtner, infielder Kaila Hunt and outfielder Haylie McCleney of University of Alabama, infielder Jill Barrett of University of Tulsa, infielder Madison Shipman of Tennessee and outfielder Bailey Wigness of Arizona State University participated in the 64-team championship.
