EVANSTON, Ill. — Welcome to the B1G Time, Andrea Filler. Northwestern’s sophomore transfer has been named the 2014 season’s inaugural Big Ten Player of the Week after making an outstanding Wildcats’ debut at the Kajikawa Classic.
Filler, a Fort Wayne, Ind., native who was an All-ACC selection at Boston College in 2012, reached base in her first 11 plate appearances of the year in Arizona — a streak that reached across all four Northwestern games in the desert.
Northwestern went 3-1 at the tournament, three times scoring over 10 runs and ending two games early via the run-rule. As a team, NU hit an absurd .405 paced by Filler’s outstanding .778 average with an .857 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Filler first drew three walks and was hit by a pitch in a narrow 4-3 defeat against No. 22 Stanford before going 2-for-2 with a triple in a win over New Mexico. Filler finished 3-for-3 with a walk in Northwestern’s wild 12-11 victory over Utah Saturday, starting a four-run seventh-inning walk-off rally with a single. She then was 2-for-4 in a victory against Boise State.
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 14-16 at the Tiger Invitational hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
