ORLANDO, Fla. – The Eagles dropped the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader to the University of Central Florida, 9-1, but bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville in the second game. In the game against Jacksonville, freshman Taylor Coroneos pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout to earn the victory in her first collegiate start at pitcher.
In the first game of the doubleheader, UCF did all of its damage in two innings. The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and five runs in the bottom on the fifth inning, while the Eagles were only able to manage one run on three hits in the game.
The Knights loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with a bunt hit by Kahley Novak, a walk by Linnea Goodman and an error that allowed Mariah Garcia to reach base. Freshman pitcher Jordan Weed was then able to get Samantha McCloskey to pop out to second base and Farrah Sullivan to strike out for the first two outs of the inning. Brittany Solis came to bat for UCF and hit a bases-clearing double, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead. Maddy Schroeder then singled down the right field line to score Solis, putting Central Florida up 4-0.
After three scoreless innings by both teams, BC was able to cut the UCF lead to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Nicole D’Argento hit a one-out double to left center that drove in Taylor Coroneos for the sole run of the game by Boston College.
UCF then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Jessica Ujvari hit a pinch-hit grand slam, and Novak hit an RBI single to settle the score a 9-1.
Weed pitched 4.1 innings and allowed nine runs (five earned) on six hits. She gave up six walks and struck out three batters.
In the second game Wednesday, Boston College broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coroneos was then able to shut down the Dolphins in the final two innings to secure the 5-0 win for BC.
Nicole Koszowski walked to lead off the fifth inning for BC. Coroneos then bunted for a single before Megan Cooley laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners to second and third. Jessie Daulton followed with a bunt single of her own, scoring Koszowski to give BC a 1-0 lead. D’Argento then hit an RBI single up the middle and Alana Dimaso hit a three-run homer to left field to put the Eagles up 5-0.
Coroneos (1-0) struck out five batters in seven innings and threw 57 of 79 pitches for strikes.
The Eagles held a 7-3 advantage in hits in the contest.
Boston College (9-7) will return to action this weekend for a five-game, three-day tournament hosted by the University of South Florida.
