LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – Co-captain Nicole D’argento pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout and freshman Madison Paulson recorded two runs batted in to lead Boston College to a 6-0 victory over Central Arkansas at Lamson Park in the opening game of the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational.
D’Argento (1-0) struck out eight batters, allowing only one hit and one walk, in seven innings to earn her first win of the season. She also earned a walk and recorded an RBI at the plate.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles broke the tie in the bottom of the second. Weed led off the inning with a single to left field. Nicole Ksozowski pinch ran for Weed and went to second on a bunt by Alanna DiMaso, got to third on an error by the first baseman, and scored on the throw to second. With DiMaso on third, Paulson grounded out to second base to drive in DiMaso, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead after two innings.
The Bears threatened in the fifth inning when they had runners on first and second with one out after a walk and hit by pitch, but catcher Tory Speer picked Whisenhunt off at second base and D’Argento struck out the next batter to get out of the inning unscathed.
Boston College extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alison Chase reached base on an error by the shortstop, Megan Colley reached on an error by the first baseman and then a throwing error by the catcher sent Chase home and Cooley to second. Taylor Coroneos singled Cooley to third and D’Argento drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles plated two more in the sixth inning to settle the score at 6-0. Weed walked to start the inning, DiMaso followed with a double, and a sac fly by Paulson and an RBI groundout by Chase drove in the final two runs.
Ciara Clampitt started on the mound for the Bears and allowed four hits and four runs (one earned) in five innings. Kylee Studioso pitched one inning of relief, allowing one hit and two earned runs.
Game two of the Eagles’ opening day doubleheader is slated for 12:30 p.m. against Memphis.
