BYU Sweeps WCC Softball Weekly Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif.-Brigham Young University junior outfielder Gordy Bravo and sophomore pitcher McKenna Bull have been selected the West Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Monday.

Bravo helped the Cougars improve to 9-6 with a five-game series at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last week. The Corona, Calif., native ran her hitting streak to 13 games, while hitting .579 at the plate, going 11-for-19 with two doubles, four runs scored, and eight runs batted in. She posted a .684 slugging percentage and a .545 on base percentage for the week, while recording seven putouts in outfield. On Thursday, BYU split the first day of the classic downing UC Santa Barbara 16-4 and stumbled to Maryland in a 1-2 decision that took nine-innings. In the split, Bravo registered four hits in nine plate appearances. On Friday, she continued her dominant play against Texas A&M (5-8) in the loss she connected on three hits in four at bats. Against Oregon State, Bravo led BYU in its 14-5 win over the Beavers, where she extended her hitting streak to 13 games-tied for 10th-longest in BYU history. Bravo rounded out the week tallying a career-high four RBI in the 5-3 victory over Indiana. For the week, she had 11 hits in 19 at-bats including two doubles, eight RBI and three stolen bases.

Bull pitched three complete games to move BYU to a 9-6 overall record-the Cougars best start through 15 games since 2012. In the circle, she registered a 3-2 outing securing wins against UC Santa Barbara (3.2 innings pitched), Indiana (7.0), and Oregon State (5.0) to improve her pitching record to 9-3 on the season, recording a 1.98 ERA while striking out 28 batters, tying a career high with 14 batters fanned in an extra-inning game against Maryland. Throughout the Classic, the Ogden, Utah native started four and appeared in all five contests, tallying 28.1 innings out of the 34.2 total.

The honor is Bravo first of her career, while Bull has claimed her fourth distinction, with the most recent from last week, (March 31, 2014, April 14, 2014, and February 16).
