BYU’s Bull, Saint Mary’s Hazel recognized by West Coast Conference

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference has named its Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 14, 2014.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
McKENNA BULL, FR., RHP, BYU
BYU freshman McKenna Bull is the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Bull finished the week with a 3-0 record and did not allow an earned run in her three appearances. Against Utah Valley on Tuesday, she pitched two innings and struck out two batters in a combined no-hitter with teammates Tori Almond and Ashley Thompson. She then earned victories over Santa Clara on Friday and Saturday striking out 13 over 12.1 innings pitched. With her 15 strikeouts on the week she has 136 on the season breaking BYU’s freshman strikeouts record.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ANDREA HAZEL, SO., C, SAINT MARY’S

Saint Mary’s sophomore Andrea Hazel is the West Coast Conference Player of the Week. Hazel led the Gaels to wins over Cal and San Diego this past week. The sophomore catcher hit two home runs in the Gaels’ second win this season over California. The win was also SMC’s second all-time win over the Golden Bears in 49 previous meetings. In the win over Cal, Hazel went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in the 8-2 win.

Hazel continued to hit over the weekend against San Diego, getting key hits, including a two-out final at-bat game tying double in the seventh inning at USD. Later in the game she added a leadoff double in the 10th, giving the Gaels an opportunity to win.

For the week, Hazel hit safely in every game, going 6-for-15 with two home runs, two doubles, and four RBI.
