Campbell Softball defeats Central in doubleheader

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored a combined 19 runs to sweep a doubleheader from North Carolina Central Tuesday at Amanda Littlejohn stadium.

Katie Baker’s five inning shutout along with Milly Martinet’s three-run home run helped Campbell defeat N.C. Central 10-0 in the first game of the twin-bill.

Katie Baker did earn the win for CU, pitching five innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven. The win for Baker improves her record to 4-2 on the season and pushes the Camels overall record to 8-7.

London Booker took the loss for the Eagles. She pitched five innings, surrendering ten runs on eight hits (seven earned), while walking seven and striking out two. The loss moves her record to 0-5 on the season, and drops the Eagles overall record to 0-5.

Campbell was led at the plate by Ericka Nesbitt and Milly Martinet who each collected two hits. Nesbitt was a perfect two-for-two with a walk; Martinet was two-for-three with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning

Emerie Germ led North Carolina Central offensively, with two hits in two at bats.

In the top of the first inning Campbell exploded for four runs. Nesbitt and Courtney Klinger drew walks, and Martinet drove a three-run homerun over the left field fence. Olivia Scarborough followed with a solo home run to push CU’s lead to 4-0.

Nesbitt led off the top of the third inning with a single; Scarborough then walked and was pinch run for by Amanda Daw. Brittany Bruce doubled down the left field line scoring Nesbitt and Daw to extend the lead to 6-0.

Kerstine Womack singled to begin the top of the fourth for CU. She then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Nesbitt drove a single through the left side driving in Womack. The Camels led 7-0.

Daw, Bruce and Clark drew walks to start off the top of the fifth inning for Campbell. Sheala Churchill then drove a double to right centerfield plating Daw and Bruce. The Camels took a 10-0 lead that secured a victory in game one.

Game 2

Stephanie Jones three hits led Campbell to a 9-1 victory over North Carolina Central in the second game of the doubleheader at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Olivia Scarborough pitched five innings, allowing six hits, one earned run and walked one batter to earn the victory for the Camels. The win for Scarborough improves her record to 2-1 on the season and moves Campbell to 9-7 on the season.

Dominque Wilson took the loss for Central, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned), on eight hits while walking six and striking out five. The loss for Wilson gives her a record of 0-1 and the Eagles to 0-6.

Jenny Tracy led Central offensively with two hits, also scoring a run.

Jones led CU at the plate going three-for-four, scoring two runs and a run driven in. Ericka Nesbitt was one-for-two with a walk and two runs batted in.

Courtney Klinger singled to right field, and Olivia Scarborough walked to start the rally for CU. in the third. Brittany Bruce tripled to right centerfield, driving in Courtney Klinger and pinch runner Amanda Daw to give Campbell a 4-1 lead.

Kerstine Womack and Jones hit back-to-back singles to start off the fourth inning. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, putting them at second and third. Nesbitt singled to left field scoring Womack and Jones. Nesbitt stole second base prior to Klingler drawling a walk. Milly Martinet drove a double to the right centerfield gap to plate Nesbitt and Klingler, putting Campbell up 8-1.

Campbell scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 9-1 final in five innings.

The Camels travel to Clearwater, Fla to play in the USF Invitational. CU begins play at 2:15 p.m. Friday against Central Connecticut State, and continues play at 4:30 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
