Canion Helps No. 15 Baylor Softball Cruise Past Northwestern, 4-0

THE RUNDOWN

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Whitney Canion tossed the 32nd shutout of her career, and picked up the 99th victory of her career helping No. 15 Baylor (12-3) defeat Northwestern (10-4) 4-0 Sunday morning in the team’s final day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Canion (7-2) struck out eight, scattered four hits and walked just two in the complete-game gem to pace Baylor. The Bears scored three unearned runs without a hit in the top of the second inning before Kaitlyn Thumann’s RBI double added insurance for BU in the top of the fourth.

Canion threw 21 innings at the Mary Nutter Classic to go 3-0, including one save, and she did not allow an earned run for the tournament. She saved a game against No. 18 Missouri Thursday night, beat No. 11 Stanford Friday, won against California Saturday and closed with the shutout against the Wildcats Sunday.

Baylor went 4-1 at the UNLV tournament to open the season, went 4-1 at BU’s Getterman Classic last week and finished 4-1 again at this weekend’s Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Bears are 3-1 against Top 25 teams this season.

Canion has allowed just three earned runs since allowing six in the season opener against No. 3 Washington. Her ERA since the loss to the Huskies is 0.39 in 54 innings of work.
Kaitlyn Thumann walked twice and added an RBI double to continue her streak of reaching base in the first 15 games of 2014.
Justine Young had the first two-hit game of her career with two singles and a career-high two runs scored.
