IRVING, Texas – A dominant weekend at the plate landed Marshall its second consecutive Conference USA weekly honor as sophomore Morgan Zerkle was named the C-USA Softball Player of the Week after a 13-hit weekend, which included eight stolen bases. In the circle, Florida Atlantic’s Amanda Wilson was given C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors following a complete-game shutout of nationally-ranked Tulsa.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MORGAN ZERKLE, MARSHALL | SO., MILTON, WEST VIRGINIA
Zerkle had a very notable weekend at the top of the Marshall lineup during ECU’s Pirate Clash in Greenville, North Carolina, which saw Marshall go 3-1 to improve to 8-1 on the season. The sophomore’s offensive output and range in center field was instrumental for the Herd as she totaled 13 hits in 17 at bats, driving home four runs and hitting an inside-the-park home run. The sophomore also stole eight bases on the weekend, with three coming in the final game against ETSU and recorded an OBP of .778. The speedy outfielder’s bat was also a force to be reckoned with as she posted a batting average .765 along with a slugging percentage of .941. It is the first C-USA weekly honor in Zerkle’s career.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
AMANDA WILSON, FLORIDA ATLANTIC | SO., MINOOKA, ILLINOIS
A C-USA All-Freshman selection last season, Wilson continued her impressive sophomore campaign, throwing a complete-game four-hit shutout against No. 22 Tulsa on Friday. Wilson struck out five in the victory with only one walk. The sophomore rounded out the weekend with a relief appearance on Saturday when she tossed a perfect inning in relief against Providence then ended the weekend by picking up a win Maryland, throwing a shutout inning in relief. On the weekend, she threw nine scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and gave up only five hits. It is the second C-USA weekly honor in Wilson’s career after winning her first on March 24, 2014.
