DePaul Sweeps BIG EAST Softball Weekly Awards

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Mary Connolly, DePaul, Jr., P/1B
Connolly batted a BIG EAST-best .600 last week, going 9-of-15 with a pair of home runs and a double. The junior scored five times and drove home five runs as the Blue Demons went 5-0 and remained perfect in BIG EAST play at 10-0. Connolly recorded four multi-hit games last week and owns a DePaul-best 12-game hitting streak. The Blue Demons faced the league’s No. 2 squad in Georgetown, as well as Illinois State and Loyola-Chicago last week.

 

BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Kirsten Verdun, DePaul, Sr., P
Verdun was credited with all five of DePaul’s wins last week in the circle, pitching to a 0.86 earned run average over 24.1 innings of work. The senior struck out 27 and boasted a WHIP of 0.83 as the Blue Demons faced a top-60 opponent in nonconference play (Illinois State) prior to square off against the BIG EAST’s No. 2 squad in Georgetown in the weekend series. Verdun allowed just one extra base hit and three walks in three games against the Hoyas.

 

Weekly Honor Roll
Alexis Cantu, Creighton, Sr., DP/OF/P
Cantu belted five home runs in four straight games against South Dakota State and at Seton Hall last week en route to 10 RBI and a 1.500 slugging percentage. Cantu’s six hits, four walks, 21 total bases, on-base percentage (.556) and .429 average (6-of-10) led the Bluejays to a 3-2 record on the week.

 

Becca Changstrom, Creighton, Sr., P
Changstrom went 1-1 at Seton Hall without allowing an earned run. The senior allowed just two extra base hits and struck out 15 in 11.0 innings of work.

 

Alex Kotter, Butler, So., SS
Kotter batted .471 in five games last week with eight hits in 17 trips to the plate.  She had five doubles, scored five runs and drove in eight.  She finished with a .765 slugging percentage.

 

Sierra McConnell, Villanova, So., OF
McConnell batted .500 (7-of-14) with six RBI, three doubles and a homer in a 4-1 week for the Wildcats, as VU claimed its first series win of the BIG EAST schedule

Kate Poppe, Villanova, So., P
Poppe boasted a 0.34 ERA and a 3-0 record, including a no-hitter against Butler on Saturday. The sophomore struck out 29 in 20.2 innings of work and was credited with just one earned run in four appearances.
