CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Longwood University sophomore softball standout Emily Murphy/Virginia Beach has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office.

“Emily gave us a chance to win each game this weekend because she was aggressive at the plate and on the bases,” said head coach Kathy Riley. “She is, without a doubt, one of the best all-around athletes in the Big South and a classy individual.”

Murphy led the Lancers’ offensive effort during their season-opening Spring Classic Tournament on February 22-23. The shortstop batted .800 (8-for-10) with six runs batted in, six stolen bases, five runs scored, an .867 on-base percentage and a 1.600 slugging percentage to help Longwood to a 3-1 record. Five of her eight hits were for extra bases, including three doubles, one triple and one home run.

On Saturday, Murphy kicked off the 2014 campaign with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, two RBI and three runs in the team’s 9-1 win against Towson. In the next game, she added three more hits, two of which were doubles, and three RBI in a 7-2 victory against Lafayette for a perfect 1.000 batting average on the day.

Murphy logged her RBI triple in the Lancers’ first game on Sunday, an 8-0 win against Lafayette in five innings. In the team’s lone loss of the weekend against Towson, she registered a hit and a walk, as well.
