Hakola Is Butler’s First BIG EAST Player of the Week

Krista Hakola, Butler, Sr., INF

Hakola batted .750 (6-of-8) with five runs batted in during a crucial series at Seton Hall which the Bulldogs won 2-of-3. For the five-game week, she batted .533 with six RBI, a pair of doubles and a homer as Butler remained in the hunt for a spot in the BIG EAST Championship field. Hakola is Butler’s first BIG EAST Player of the Week. Teammate Leah Bry was tabbed Pitcher of the Week earlier this season in the Bulldogs’ first campaign in the BIG EAST Conference.

Kirsten Verdun, DePaul, Sr., P

Verdun went 2-0 with wins over visiting Villanova, including a no-hitter on Sunday in which she struck out seven. For the week, she struck out 12 and did not allow an earned run and surrendered just three hits in 9.0 innings pitched. This is her third BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week certificate of the season which ties for the most among conference hurlers in 2014.

Kristin Gutierrez, Butler, So., P 

Gutierrez pitched to a 0.70 ERA and a 3-0 record last week, striking out 19 in wins over Seton Hall and Eastern Illinois over 20.0 innings of work.

Becca Changstrom, Creighton, Sr., P
Changstrom pitched to a 1.62 ERA in 13.0 innings of work, striking out 20 in a 1-1 week at St. John’s.

Liz Dike, Creighton, Jr., INF
Dike batted .400 with 3 RBI and a homer in a three-game series at St. John’s, going 1-for-3 with three RBI in CU’s 4-0 win in the series finale.

Mary Connolly, DePaul, Jr., 1B
Connolly batted .667 in a 3-0 series against Villanova, highlighted by a 4-for-4 appearance in the series finale which included a trio of RBI.

Meredith Henze, Seton Hall, Sr., 3B
Henze batted .476 in a six-game week for the Pirates, adding two RBI, two doubles and a pair of walks.
