RUSTON, La. – The Jackson State University softball team captured its first win on the season over the University of Tennessee-Martin, 4-2 day three of the Lady Techster Tournament.
With the victory, the Lady Tigers improved to 1-3 overall.
Senior Lauren Aikens doubled to right center in the first inning, scoring sophomore Canessa Swanson from second base, after she walked and stole second base to record JSU’s first run of the game. Aikens also came around to score on a wild pitch in the inning, taking a 2-0 lead over UT-Martin.
The Lady Tigers scored their next and final two runs in the second inning off mistakes from the Skyhawks defense and stolen bases from JSU’s offense.
Junior Vicki Johnson, sophomore Chelsea Smith, Swanson, and Aikens each collected a hit in the contest. Senior Breea Jamerson was tabbed with the victory on the hill for the Lady Tigers, going seven complete innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. She improves to 1-1 on the season.
Jackson State will travel to Pine-Bluff, Ark. to face Arkansas Pine-Bluff Wednesday, Feb. 12, before participating in the University of Arkansas Invitational Thurs., Feb. 13 thru Sat, Feb. 15 in Fayetteville.
