LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind home runs from senior catcher Griffin Joiner, freshman catcher Rachael Metzger and junior infielder Ansley Smith, and scoreless outings in the circle from sophomores Meagan Prince and Shannon Smith and freshman Erin Rethlake, the Kentucky softball team posted a 10-0 victory over Georgetown College to open its fall exhibition schedule last weekend.
Prince started the game in the circle for the Wildcats, striking out six batters with only one hit allowed and one walk. The sophomore from Martin, Tenn., was replaced by the rookie Rethlake, who allowed two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. S. Smith, who earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors last season, finished the game in the circle by not allowing a runner to reach base with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Joiner went 1-for-1 in the game with a three-run home run and a walk, while Metzger replaced the veteran behind the plate and went 2-for-3 with a home run and a single. Junior utility player Maisie Steed went 2-for-3 in the game with two stolen bases, while sophomore outfielder Breanne Ray went 1-for-3. A. Smith hit a two-run homer in the game, while Rethlake excelled in the circle and at the dish, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Kentucky will continue its fall exhibition schedule on Sunday with a doubleheader against Ohio State starting at 11 a.m. ET at John Cropp Stadium. Admission and parking is free. The doubleheader is the final fall home exhibition for UK, who will travel to Michigan and EKU over the next few weeks to conclude fall action.
