Murray State Softball Starts Fall with Two Wins

The Murray State softball team opened its fall season by defeating Lake Land in a doubleheader, 5-2 and 20-1, on Sunday at Racer Field in Murray.

In game one, the Racers used nine hits from nine different players to dispatch the Lakers. Maggie Glass led MSU by going 1-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a hit by pitch, while Alexa Becker went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk.

CheyAnne Gaskey picked up the win for MSU in the contest by allowing just one run on two hits over four innings. Gaskey also had six strikeouts in the game, including three looking to begin the day with a 1-2-3 first inning. Haven Campbell earned the save in the game by allowing one run on four hits with a strikeout over the final three innings.

Game two was a different story as five players recorded multiple hits, including two different Racers with four. Becker was a home run short of the cycle in the game as she went 4-for-5 with four runs, four RBIs and a walk. Freshman Erika Downey followed Becker with four hits of her own to go along with three runs two RBIs and a double.

Jessica Twaddle was 3-for-6 in game two with three runs and three RBIs, while Mallory Young was 3for-5 with a run, a RBI and a walk. Glass rounded out the Racers with multiple hits by going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, making her the only MSU player to tally multiple RBIs in both games.

J.J. Francis went four innings and allowed just one run on five hits with two strikeouts to earn the second game win. Mason Robinson finished out the game and was nearly perfect in the last three innings giving up no runs, no hits, walking just one and striking out four.

Next weekend the Racers will continue fall play at Southern Illinois’ Saluki Fall Round Robin II. While in Carbondale, MSU will take on John A. Logan and the host Salukis.
