BOISE, Idaho – Boise State softball head coach Cindy Ball announced the addition of assistant coach Nate Miller to the Bronco staff Monday.
Miller comes to Boise from Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, where he spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach. During his three seasons in St. George the Red Storm went 129-37, shared two PacWest titles (2013-14), and made three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances which culminated in a third-place finish at the Division II Women’s College World Series in 2014.
“My family and I are thrilled for this opportunity. We are very grateful for Cindy’s consideration to join the Bronco family and can’t wait to get to work,” Miller said. “This is a true blessing in my life, and I’m excited to coach and serve within the Bronco community.”
Miller served primarily as the program’s hitting and infield coach, and under his tutelage the Red Storm offense finished second in the Division II with a .365 team batting average in 2014. The team ranked in the national top 10 in three additional offensive categories: on-base percentage (.426 – eighth), doubles per game (1.90 – eighth) and scoring (6.97 runs per game – 10th), while defensively the Red Storm set a program record with 32 double plays, an average of 0.52 per game, good for eighth-best.
Two of Miller’s infielders, 2B/SS Nicole Chavez (.405, 19 doubles, 11 home runs, 36 RBI) and 1B/3B Sheila Gelter (.361, 10 doubles, five home runs, 39 RBI), were each selected to the NFCA All-America Second Team in 2014, while outfielder Courtney Sherwin (.453, 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 55 RBI) earned a spot on the Daktronics All-America Second Team.
“Nate is an amazing addition to our Bronco family. We are excited for him to jump in and start working with the infield,” said Ball. “His success at Dixie State doesn’t describe enough of what he will bring to our program not only as a coach but as a remarkable human being. We could not have picked a better person to complete our team.”
Miller began his coaching career at the prep level, serving as an assistant baseball coach at Clearfield High School and Syracuse High School from 2008-10. He then served as head coach of the Adidas Futures Team from New Jersey in 2011 before joining the Dixie State staff.
He has been active as a player and coach in both softball and baseball from a young age. Miller began playing men’s fast-pitch softball at the age of 14 and continues to travel with his club. As a collegiate student-athlete he played baseball at Irvine Valley College (Calif.) before serving an LDS mission to Des Moines, Iowa then receiving his bachelor’s degree in communication from Dixie State.
