WACO, Texas – The No. 14-ranked Baylor Bears claimed the 2014 Getterman Classic title with a 2-1 win over No. 18 Missouri Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. BU’s Whitney Canion improved to 4-2 on the season with her fourth consecutive complete game, with the senior left hander limiting the Tigers to just five hits in the win.

Canion struck out six to help Baylor improve to 8-2 on the seaosn while the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 4-1. Clare Hosack’s sacrifice fly in the first drove home a run, and Kaitlyn Thumann’s third hit of the game drove home Ari Hawkins, which would be all the offense would need.

The Tigers scored their only run in the fifth on an infield hit by Emily Crane that Ashtin Stephens was able to score from second base on. However, Canion retired seven of the last eight Tiger hitters to close the door.

Baylor, Lipscomb and Missouri all went 4-1 on the tournament, and the Lady Bears were declared the winners after tournament rules gave them a tiebreaker. Lipscomb beat Baylor, Missouri beat Lipscomb, and Baylor defated Missouri, leaving it up to a runs allowed against tied teams. That eliminated Lispcomb, and then Baylor won the tiebreaker of runs for between the remaining tied teams with the 2-1 win over the Tigers.

Baylor’s Canion, Thumann and Hawkins were members of the 12-player all-tournament team.
