Spartanburg, S.C.– Coming off a weekend when she hit .643 with three home runs and 10 RBIs, USC Upstate standout centerfielder Shellie Robinson has been named the National Field Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Robinson becomes the first softball player in the history of the program to earn a national weekly honor.
Robinson had a tremendous weekend to open the 2014 season. She helped lead Upstate to a perfect 5-0 start with two wins over Virginia and one victory each over Eastern Michigan, Youngstown State and Towson. She hit .643 with three home runs, two doubles, 10 RBIs, six runs and a 1.429 slugging percentage. She was also flawless in the field with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in five chances.
Robinson had a torrid start to the weekend. She was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run in the 8-0 victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday. She had a stellar day Saturday, finishing 3-for-3 in both wins over Youngstown State and Virginia. She had two home runs with a walk, three RBIs and three runs in the 12-4 win over Youngstown State and had a home run and two doubles with four RBIs and a run in the 6-1 win over Virginia. She finished the weekend with a hit, run and RBI in the victories over Towson and Virginia on Sunday. In all, she either drove in or scored 16 of Upstate’s 41 runs during the weekend.
Robinson was named co-MVP of the tournament with teammate Hannah Alexander, who went 3-0 and tossed a perfect game in the 8-0 victory over Virginia on Sunday.
Upstate returns to action this weekend, hosting the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational Friday-Sunday at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans will face Ball State, George Mason, Virginia Tech and Presbyterian in the tournament.
