EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Another Saturday. Another no-hitter.

Haley Chambers tossed the SIUE softball team’s second no-hitter of the fall season in an 8-0, five-inning victory over Parkland College at Cougar Field.

The Cougars also defeated Jefferson College 5-1 in the opening game of the day.

SIUE went to 4-0 for the fall season and has now outscored its opponents 33-5 in those games.

In the opening game, SIUE’s Alexis Kohrs, who tossed a no-hitter last weekend, allowed just three hits over six innings against Jefferson. Baylee Douglass threw the final inning and did not give up a hit.

“We’re throwing the ball fairly well,” said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an infield error and an RBI single by Chambers. SIUE had single tallies in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with RBIs from Sabrina Miller, Alex McDavid, and Chambers.

Montgomery made a defensive switch against Jefferson, placing McDavid at shortstop instead of third and Miller at the corner.

“If you were here, you would have seen that she played outstanding at that position,” Montgomery said of Miller.

Shortstop also was not new defensive position for McDavid. “She actually came in as a shortstop, and I made her a third baseman,” noted Montgomery.

McDavid returned to third base for the second game and watched as Chambers tossed the no-hitter.

“She (Chambers) did not have great command today,” Montgomery said. “Her ball was tailing on her a bit, but she threw well enough to get a no-hitter.”

SIUE’s offense jumped on Parkland pitcher Leah Kays for five runs in the first inning.

It all started with a solo home run by Chambers off the scoreboard in right field. SIUE would collect four more hits in the inning, including an RBI single by Maria Prete who was playing shortstop in game two.

The Cougars extended the lead to 7-0 in the third inning with back-to-back RBI hits from Kelsey Hansen and Jordan LaFave. Hansen doubled home Haley Adrian, and LaFave singled home Hansen.

Adrian put the Cougars ahead 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single that scored pinch runner Rebecca Gray.

“What I’m really most happy about is that we are getting contributions throughout the lineup,” said Montgomery.

Thirteen different players have recorded a hit in four fall contests, and 12 players have at least one RBI.

“It’s going to make everyone work harder,” said Montgomery. “We’re pretty versatile. We have a lot of kids who can play a number of positions. I guess my statement will be if you want to play you better hit.”
