Southland Softball names Piancastelli, Carter Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – McNeese State freshman catcher Erika Piancastelli was selected Southland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sophomore Liz Carter was chosen as pitcher of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Hitter of the Week – Erika Piancastelli, McNeese State
Piancastelli led McNeese at the plate last week as she had a total of four home runs, hitting at least one homer in three of the four games played. The Carlsbad, Calif. (Carlsbad H.S.), native opened the Abilene Christian series with two hits, both of which were home runs and four RBI. Piancastelli ended the week going 7-for-12 at the plate, earning one double, nine RBI, one walk and one strike out with a .583 batting average, 1.667 slugging percentage and a .615 on base percentage. In the ACU series alone, she was 5-of-9 with three home runs, eight RBI and a .556 average. This is the second time this season Piancastelli has been chosen for the weekly award, she also earned hitter of the week honors on March 10.

Honorable Mention: Jessie Taylor, Central Arkansas; Katie Lacour, Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Herman, Houston Baptist.

Pitcher of the Week – Liz Carter, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Carter propelled the Islanders in the circle with three wins and an impressive 0.37 ERA this past week. The sophomore from Austin, Texas (Westlake H.S.), gave up just one run in three games while collecting 10 strikeouts in 19 innings. Carter threw for two complete games against Stephen F. Austin, clinching the series for A&M-Corpus Christi with her second win of the weekend. She also led the Islanders to a 4-2 road win over Houston last Wednesday.

Honorable Mention: Laci Belovsky, Houston Baptist; Micaela Bouvier, Northwestern State; Emily Vincent, McNeese State; Taylor Bishop, Southeastern Louisiana.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
