QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s softball head coach Amy Kvilhaug has announced the hiring of Alex Schultz as the new assistant coach for the 2014-15 softball team where she will work primarily with infielders.
“We are excited about Coach Schultz joining our staff,” said Kvilhaug. “She brings the expertise and energy we are looking for to assist our team in getting to the next level. As we continue to build on our program goals for a BIG EAST title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, I am confident that Coach Schultz will be instrumental in helping us get there.”
Schultz joins the staff after serving two years as the assistant coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo where she served primarily as the defensive coach. Prior to her time at CSU-Pueblo, Schultz served two years as a graduate assistant coach at Adams State College where she worked with infielders for two years while earning a M.A. in Sports Administration.
As a Division I softball player at the University of Maryland, Schultz helped the Terps finish 34-24. After hosting a NCAA regional tournament for the first time in school history, Schultz finished her senior year as the team leader in many statistical categories including hits (62) and batting average (.378). In addition, Schultz led the team in doubles (13), home runs (8), and RBI (36) and was the only member of the squad to play in all 58 games of the season, starting each at third base.
Leading the team with 16 multiple-hit games while recording a team-best 13-game hitting streak, Schultz was named a Division I All-Star by the ECAC in 2010. In 2010, Schultz was named All-ACC First Team and to the NFCA All-Region Second Team. Her .378 batting average was good enough for her to finish in second in the ACC statistics.
While earning her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, Schultz capped off her career in 2010 by breaking into the top 10 of Maryland’s career record books in several categories including runs, triples, home runs and stolen bases. She became just the sixth player in Maryland history to break the 100-run mark.
Schultz was a 2006 graduate of Pueblo West High School where she played a major role as the team won back-to-back 4A State Championships in 2004 and 2005, her junior and senior years.
Because of leadership she was named Honorable Mention All-State and First Team All-South Central League her senior year. During her senior year, Schultz had a .428 batting average and led the state in triples.
