Whitney, Kotter Earn BIG EAST Softball Awards

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Alex Kotter, Butler, Jr., INF
Kotter was near flawless at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., last week. The junior batted a BIG EAST-best .900 over four games, recording nine hits on 10 trips to the plate. Kotter scored five runs, batted in another five and was walked five times towards a .933 on base percentage and 1.400 slugging. The Bulldogs went 2-2 and at the site of the 2015 BIG EAST Tournament with wins over Samford and UIC.

 

BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Micaela Whitney, Creighton, Jr., P
Whitney tossed her first career no-hitter in the Bluejays’ opener against Pacific in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The junior struck out 11 in that game and started two other tilts over the weekend along with one additional appearance for a 3-1 record, 0.56 earned run average and 23 strike outs. Opponents batted just .189 over 25 innings of work with Whitney in the circle. The Bluejays finished the weekend 3-2 with wins over Pacific, Western Michigan, and UC Riverside.

Weekly Honor Roll
Erin Burner, St. John’s, Sr., C
Burner led the Red Storm to a 3-1 opening weekend by going 7-of-11 from the plate for a .538 average, scoring four times and batting in a run.

Liz Dike, Creighton, Sr., INF
Dike sparked the Bluejay offense with a .471 batting average, belting three triples and knocking in three runs while scoring four times herself.

Lauren Fischer, Seton Hall, So., P/INF
Fischer won both games she started for the Pirates last weekend, including a five-inning one-hitter against Texas Southern on Saturday. She totaled eight strikeouts in 11 innings pitched and a 1.27 ERA.

Sara Haefelli, Seton Hall, Sr., OF
Haefelli batted .529 with 12 RBI, five homers and two doubles, sparking the offense for the 5-0 Pirates.

Morgan Maize, DePaul, Jr., 2B
Maize batted .467 with four RPI and three homers over five games played in Hawaii against stiff competition, including two games against No. 3/4 Oklahoma.
