Fort Wayne, IUPUI Win on Day Two of 2014 Summit League Softball Tournament

The Basics
Score: No. 2 Fort Wayne 9, No. 3 South Dakota 8
Records: Fort Wayne (39-13), South Dakota (29-21)
Location: Ellig Sports Complex – Fargo, N.D.

Fargo, N.D. – No. 2 Fort Wayne came from behind to score six runs in the final two innings and earn a 9-8 victory over No. 3 South Dakota on walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning at the Ellig Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

Fort Wayne’s Megan Flenniken earned the win in relief striking out four, while allowing four hits and four runs in 2.1 innings.

Turning Point
With South Dakota ahead 4-3 going into the sixth inning, the Coyotes scored four runs on a two walks and two hits, including a three-run homer from Katie Cochran, to extend their lead to five, 8-3.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Mastodons tied up the game 8-8 scoring five runs.  Larissa Franklin pulled Fort Wayne within one run, 8-7 on a grand slam to right field.  Then with bases loaded Audrey Mintari reached first on a catcher’s interference to push home the tying run.

With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Fort Wayne’s Dani Pugh drew a walk to drive home the winning run.

  • Larissa Franklin went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Mastodons.

Fargo, N.D. – A record-breaking performance by IUPUI’s Taylor Chitwood helped the fourth-seeded Jaguars upset top-seeded North Dakota State, 15-8 on day two of The Summit League Softball Championships at the Ellig Sports Complex on Thursday night.

Chitwood set a pair of Summit League Championship game records as she was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with a homer, a double, six RBI and two runs scored. The freshman’s five hits and six RBI are the most in a single game at the league tournament.

IUPUI’s Jocelyn Oppenhuis recorded her 10th win of the season with two strikeouts, five hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.

Turning Point
IUPUI took a 2-0 lead over North Dakota State into the 1-hour, 45-minute rain delay.

When play resumed, the Jaguars held onto their lead until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Bison captured their first lead of the game, 7-6, scoring three runs on two hits and an error.

The Jaguars fired right back and scored nine runs over the final two innings.  IUPUI plated four runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, 10-7, on a pair of hits, including a three-run homer by Maggie Good.

The Bison got one run back in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 10-8 game heading into the final frame.  However, the Jaguars scored five insurance runs on five hits in the seventh, including back-to-back home runs by Taylor Chitwood and Sarah Lawrence.

  • Seven Bison and six Jaguars recorded at least one hit, including three players on both sides posting multi-hit games.
  • Alex Sobrero went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Bison, while Jackie Stifter was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run, and Amanda Grable was 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs and a RBI.
